Repairs to improve conditions for driver jobs

Road repairs set to take place soon will improve conditions for those with driver jobs.

About $750,000 in Emergency Relief (ER) funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will go to stabilize and repair roads damaged by heavy rains on federal lands throughout northern California.

“Thousands of drivers use these roads each year –  especially during the heavy tourism months of summer,” said Secretary Foxx. “We are committed to doing everything we can to help repair and reopen these federal routes quickly and safely, to ensure the people and businesses of California do not suffer economically.”

For nearly two weeks beginning March 3, heavy rains saturated northern California, contributing to several large slides and rock falls that damaged roads in three National Forests and one district of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

These ER funds will be released quickly for use on the highest priority roads to stabilize and repair the impacted roadway embankments and removal of slide debris from roadways.

“These emergency relief funds will make immediate repairs possible throughout the area,” said Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau. “We want to ensure that everyone in northern California has access to safe roads and safe bridges, and especially on these important federal lands roads, so travel can return to normal as soon as possible.”

These funds will help road crews begin repairs and restore traffic. Repair cost for the damage is currently estimated at $2 million, though this amount is likely to increase as additional damage assessments are completed. This initial “quick release” payment is a first installment on the costs of other repairs once they are known.

A new study from Careerbuilder posits that many employers are filling driver jobs with temporary workers.

CareerBuilder compiled a list of fast-growing occupations for temporary employment from 2016 to 2018. The following occupations have at least 10,000 jobs available, are expected to grow 6 percent or more, and pay $15 or more per hour*:

Program announced that will impact driver jobs

A new program has just been released that will further impact driver jobs.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has created the the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) Formula Working Group.  The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act requires the DOT Secretary to establish a working group to analyze the requirements and factors for establishing a new allocation formula for the MCSAP, the flagship state grant program of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The DOT Secretary was required to establish a MCSAP working group within 180 days of enactment of the FAST Act – December 4, 2015 – and the working group must provide its recommendations to the Secretary no later than one year from the date of its establishment.  According to the FAST Act, the working group must be composed of representatives from state CMV safety agencies, FMCSA, an organization representing state CMV enforcement agencies, and any other persons that the DOT Secretary considers necessary.  State safety agency participation must make up at least 51 percent of the working group, and the group is exempt from the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

“We’re extremely pleased to have such a diverse group of leading commercial motor vehicle safety professionals participating in this significant endeavor,” said FMCSA Acting Administrator Scott Darling.  “This is an exciting opportunity to identify ways in which we can improve our grant allocation processes and, in turn, improve safety for the traveling public.”

“The Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program provides critical funds each year to states to support their large truck and bus safety efforts,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.  “Now that we have expeditiously fulfilled this FAST Act requirement, I look forward to receiving the working group’s recommendations on how we can enhance and streamline this important safety grant program with the ultimate goal of making our nation’s roads safer.”
